FREEHOLD BORO PD LAUNCHES
YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Freehold Borough Police Department
Friday, June 6, 2014
The Freehold Borough Police Department is launching a new program called the Youth Leadership Academy. The program is designed as a sequel to our immensely successful Youth Police Academy, but it will be very different.
Essentially, the YLA will promote leadership, followership, and responsibility. Each month, we will have meetings with presentations on leadership from leaders of different industries including law enforcement, the military, the private sector and other organizations. The kids will learn how these leaders ascended to their positions, what they feel are the most important tenets of leadership and what they suggest young men and women do now to help advance their opportunities in the future.
We will also involve ourselves in efforts to support Freehold Borough and surrounding communities through volunteer work and other worthwhile endeavors.
Our long term goal is to establish a command staff among senior members and for the program to be run by the kids themselves.
For now, the program will be available to young men and women between 12 and 18-years-old who have graduated from the Freehold Borough Youth Police Academy. Some of the goals of the program include the following:
1. Develop leadership skills and make learning about leadership a continuous effort;
2. Improve college and career resumes;
3. Get opportunities for volunteer and other community work;
4. Learn skills valuable for college, career, and life;
5. Give kids the opportunity to surround themselves with positive peer influences;
6. Ascend to leadership positions within the organization.
The Youth Leadership Academy will evolve as it moves forward, and we look forward to working with its members and developing it into an unparalleled, innovative, model leadership program, one other municipalities will emulate.
There will be an annual fee of $40.00 (there will be a discount for families with more than one member) which will help fund the program and cover the purchase of the polo shirt YLA uniforms. Financial assistance will be available.
The Youth Leadership Academy will be funded entirely through membership fees and fundraising. Here, we will need help. If you would like to make a donation to help the Youth Leadership Academy get started, please contact us.
The officers administering the program are doing it entirely on their own time as a way of giving back to our community.
If you are interested, please email your child's name, his or her age, and which YPA class he or she attended to FreeholdBoroYLA@gmail.com.
If you have any questions, please contact DSgt. Andrew A. DeMuth Jr. at (732) 462-1233 Ext. 151.
The coordinators for the program will be DSgt. Andrew A. DeMuth Jr., Sgt. Ronnie R. Steppat Jr., Ptl. Kevin Werner, Ptl. Shaun Hobbs and Det. John Reiff.
